Terry is television’s “it” girl when it comes to automotive
expertise. In the auto expert industry, Terry is recognized for her
easy to follow car advice that allows everyone to embrace being
their own mechanic.
When not working tirelessly on her various writing and television
projects, Terry enjoys the speed and thrill of racing anything she
can climb behind the wheel of; from demolition derbies, racing
dragsters to racing on dirt tracks using modified street cars.
Terry races it all.
Because of her
demanding schedule she splits her time between the East and West
coast. Her favorite hobbies include fishing, outdoor activities,
hanging out with her yellow lab "Rocky", supporting her hometown
football team the Dallas Cowboys, attending concerts, and cooking.
As if that wasn’t enough to make the rest of us feel like
under-achievers, Terry also runs three miles a day.
If you can’t catch her column in The Houston Chronicle or check her
out on the boob-tube, never rule out seeing Terry at a local
sporting event, gnashing on a nasty plate of over-cheesed nachos
with a cold brew in her hand.
ASK PATTY: How did you become a car expert?
BARBARA:Basically
I am a product of having six older brothers and growing up on a
Texas ranch. If my brothers were doing it I wanted to. We
constantly messed around with anything on four wheels and an engine.
As I grew up I became even more passionate and realized my true love
of the automobile. Well, anything with an engine and tranny. Since
2005, I have taken my passion for cars in front of the camera and I
absolutely love it.
ASK PATTY: Are you still racing cars? What are some of your
upcoming events?
BARBARA:I
actually have a race coming up on November 13. I am the head driver
for Glacier Bear Racing out of Mooresville NC to race in the Pure
Stock Production/Full Size Utility class in this years Baja 1000 in
Mexico.
ASK PATTY: What is your favorite kind of race to participate
in (demolition, dirt, stock, etc)?
BARBARA:
I love all types of racing but I think dirt track racing is
the highest in my blood level!
ASK PATTY: Tell us a little bit about your reality show?
BARBARA:Barbara
Terry Garage “BTG” is a 30 minute Docu/Soap/Reality, positioned in a
garage in LA. The viewers will be educated and entertained by
myself and a staff of functional and dysfunctional mechanics while
the cameras also follow me on the road racing, dating, being a
spokesperson for all of the companies that have brought me on,
hosting gigs, filming TV commercials, book signings for my first
book about to be released, writing my weekly columns. Basically
everything that adds up to my chaotic life that I am absolutely so
lucky to have!
ASK PATTY: Is this your dream career?
BARBARA: What makes it my dream career is my love and passion
for the automobile. I so love the fact that I am able to help
consumers with their car problems and be entertaining at the same
time.
ASK PATTY: Are men constantly surprised by your automotive
knowledge? Has a mechanic ever tried to give you unnecessary
repairs?
BARBARA: Wow, we should create a whole special section
regarding this question. “Smiles”
Honestly, it is so rare these days to come across a male critic as I
like to call them. I have proven myself the last couple of years
since I started this whole new entertainment career that I can get
my hands just as greasy as any guy out there can.
ASK PATTY: Future Projects?
BARBARA: I have to say that starting about a year ago my
career has started escalating. I would say that weekly I receive
offers and or contracts. I am however pretty picky of the companies
that I choose to align myself with. So yes, a lot of
projects/contracts as we speak are being finalized. My web site is
updated on a weekly basis with new info, deals and appearances.
This week I am off to Host/MC the General Motors Style Dubai Event
of course being held in Dubai then I race to get to Tijuana Mexico
to arrive there approximately 6 hours before I hop in my race truck
to race 1300 miles in the Baja 1000.
From the lack of women
in NASCAR to fearless ladies of the NHRA, this week
AskPatty.com zooms readers through the blogosphere to
round-up all the top news in the world of women in
motorsports.
There might not be a
female race car driver in any of
NASCAR's top
series. But that is not preventing females from making
in roads in other areas of the sport. "I see women every
day when I'm at the track, not just a bunch of them
cheering in the stands, but working on teams," said
DeLana Harvick, a Busch and Truck Series owner and wife
of Nextel Cup driver Kevin Harvick.
"Women can do what the guys can in this sport if they
want to. I think we'll see a female driver compete
full-time at some point, too."

Barbara Terry is taking a break from her writing
duties at The Houston Chronicle and her numerous
television appearances to join Glacier Bear Racing as
head driver on their team to race in the Baja 1000,
November 10-16, 2007.
Good luck!
On December 1st, race car driver Karen Salvaggio will
compete at “25 Hours of Thunderhill”––the longest
endurance race in North America. Her efforts will
benefit the
United Spinal Association, a non-profit organization
dedicated to improving the quality of life for all
Americans with spinal cord injuries or disorders.
Since 2002, the
25 Hours of Thunderhill race has been held annually
at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California. The
event, which was developed by the National Auto Sport
Association (NASA) and sponsored by the U.S. Air Force,
attracts amateur, factory sponsored, and professional
race teams from all over the world.
After the recently announced upgrade from World Cup to
World Championship, the FIM Women’s Motocross World
Championship has hired Champion Stefy Bau as the
Manager of the series.
It's quite an undertaking for Bau and confirms
Youthstream’s commitment into the series, which will
feature a total of five rounds in 2008, to be held
together with the FIM MX1/MX2 Grand Prix’s.
Peggy Llewellyn
finished her championship contending, first full year on
the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle circuit with a second
round loss to new series champion Matt Smith at the
season finale at Pomona, California. "It's been a
learning season," said Llewellyn.
"I learned what it is to run a full year on the POWERade
tour and run for a championship. I experienced that all
in one year. "My weekend in Pomona started off pretty
good," Peggy continued, hesitantly. "But I need to make
more good, consistent passes. On my first qualifying
pass, George (crew chief George Bryce) noticed that I
rolled at the line a lot."
Castrol GTX driver
Ashley Force's day ended with a second round loss,
but she locked up a Top 10 finish when Arend fell to
teammate Burkart. Ms. Force, the former cheerleader and
Top Alcohol Dragster pilot, completed her rookie
campaign driving the 8,000 horsepower Ford Mustang to
one final round appearance and four semi final
appearances.
"I'm finishing in the Top Ten because of (crew chiefs)
Ron Douglas and Dean Antonelli. I helped out here and
there. Mainly it was them and my team. We were out for a
while in 16th place because we missed a race. The fact
that we were able to get back in the top ten this
weekend was exciting," said Force.

With all the buzz at the L.A. Auto Show about hybrids and fuel
efficiency, as well as the holiday driving coming up, we thought
we would introduce you to someone helpful! Meet
Dr. Fuel Good, the Shell
fuel spokesperson! Dr. Fuel Good is Barbara Terry and she is
your one-stop answer to all things fuel-related! She will help
you learn how to save at the pump and stretch those gallons.
ASK PATTY: How have gas prices affected the
types of problems you see in the garage?
BARBARA: Gas prices will affect the
performance and longevity of a vehicle if people are buying a
cheaper, low-quality gasoline. Doing so clogs up their fuel
system and allows the build-up of carbon deposits on their
intake valves and fuel system.
ASK PATTY: What are the main questions people
ask you when you educate people on fuel tips?
BARBARA: What gasoline I recommend - to which
I always refer them to a high-quality gasoline that meets the
TOP
TIER Detergent Gasoline
standard.
To explain TOP TIER a little bit, it was developed by four of
the world’s top automakers: BMW, General Motors, Honda and
Toyota. They recognized that EPA minimum detergent requirements
do not do enough to ensure optimal engine performance and have
joined together to establish and encourage a higher standard.
Lower detergency fuels that don't meet TOP TIER standards can
result in carbon build-up on critical engine parts, which can
affect an engine's ability to perform properly.
My mom, for instance, always uses Shell's
V-Power, which is Shell's
premium grade gasoline and contains five times the cleaning
agents required by federal government standards - it can clean
up those deposits left behind by the lower quality gasolines.
Even Shell's regular and mid-grade gasolines have twice the
amount of detergents required by federal government standards
and that makes a difference.
ASK PATTY: What are some top fuel saving tips
you would give women?
BARBARA: My top 3
FuelStretch tips are:
1. Always keep the proper air pressure in your tires.
2. Have your car tuned up on a regular basis.
3. Remove any and all excessive weight out of your vehicle.
ASK PATTY: What if any are the big changes you
are seeing today in how vehicles are being marketed to women?
BARBARA: I think all of the automobile manufacturers
are highly competitive, which has lead to a change in recent
years in how vehicles are coming off the manufacturers' assembly
lines. For instance, luxury amenities and options are becoming
more standard now instead of having to pay extra like in the
past. The manufactures are also offering more consumer-friendly
factory warranties.
ASK PATTY: Tell me about your most recent personal
experience buying a vehicle. What vehicle did you buy, and why
did you buy it?
BARBARA: My most recent automobile purchase was
a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.0 straight 6
engine and the Quadra-trac 4-wheel drive. I think Jeep makes an
awesome SUV!
ASK PATTY: What is some advice you would give
women about fuel safety and fuel economy?
BARBARA: You should be smart when dealing with fuel and
take proper precautions when handling or filling up. One
obvious thing is not to be around anything flammable when
handling gasoline. (More
tips for this can be
found at Shell’s website.)
Fuel economy is something that people can learn more about at
www.shell.com/us. On the
site, they have a whole program called FuelStretch that includes
several easy-to-use driving and maintenance tips. There is also
a Fuel I.Q. quiz on the site that's quick and fun and will help
you learn what "fuel personality" you have.
